For many women, fitness does not come easy. In fact, it is one of the most dreaded activities (comparable to a visit to the dentist for an
exodontia) that women put off until the very last moment
when she has no other choice because her health depends on it. For others, it’s a big part of her life

but often times becomes an activity that seclude her from her social circle uninterested in the pursuit. The idea of Girlnetic was conceptualized to be the solution to these two common problems that women face when it comes to health and fitness: to alter the perception of “being healthy” and “working out” so that it is no longer a chore but an anticipated hobby shared with girlfriends who love this kind of stuff.
The conception of Girlnetic occurred in New York City on November 2008 as a result of a fitness pilot program created and organized by
Jonaliza D. Misa earlier that year. The purpose of the program was to break women out of her ordinary 9-to-5 routine, adding fun and excitement with activities beyond the bar scene. The idea of the program was conceived during a discussion between Jonaliza and her colleagues about their monotonous gym routine, and for some, lack thereof. The conclusion of this discussion:
“If fitness were more fun, we’d be doing more of it.” Jonaliza decided to organize weekly fitness activities that she and her colleagues thought would be fun to explore, and as a true entrepreneur, developed this idea into what is now Girlnetic.
The name “Girlnetic” was derived by combining to create a word that defines the main idea of the organization:
a female person possessing, exerting or displaying energy through movement,
i.e. a girl in motion.
The name may be misleading to some since GFSC is for women 18 and over, not girls 17 and below. The reason we use the noun “girl” is to epitomize in the name the way most women feel when living a healthy and active lifestyle: exhilarated and revitalized into a stronger, more youthful version of herself. We use this in the name as a constant reminder of that feeling attained after making the right choices about our health, and after a great workout.
